Bricco delle Piane originates in southwestern Sardinia, in the Sulcis area, from pure Carignano grapes grown on historic sapling vineyards, often free-standing, rooted in sandy and calcareous-clayey soils near the sea. Viticulture is strongly linked to local tradition and is characterised by very low yields, manual harvesting and great attention to the phenolic ripening of the grapes. After harvesting, the grapes are quickly transported to the cellar and subjected to red fermentation with maceration on the skins for about two weeks at a controlled temperature around 26-28°C. Once fermentation is complete, the wine ages in French oak barriques for approximately 12 months, followed by a further period of maturation in the bottle, which helps define the complexity and fineness of the final product.
Characteristics of this Carignano del Sulcis
On organoleptic examination it appears with an intense ruby red colour, with reflections that tend towards garnet with evolution. On the nose it is broad, intense and complex, with hints of ripe red fruit and jam, accompanied by sweet spicy notes, vanilla and light balsamic and herbaceous nuances. Also emerging are calls of aromatic herbs and slightly empyreumatic touches given by the refinement in wood. In the mouth it is a wine of great structure, full and enveloping, with good flavour and tannins present but well integrated. The freshness balances the softness and contributes to a harmonious, long and persistent sip, with fruity and spicy returns on the finish.
Recommended pairings with this red wine from Sardinia
As for gastronomic pairings, Bricco delle Piane is best expressed with rich and structured dishes from the cuisine of the land. It is ideal with roasted or braised red meats, game and tasty preparations such as stews or complex ragùs. It also pairs very well with aged cheeses, where its intensity and tannic component find balance in the flavour of the product. The recommended serving temperature is around 16-18°C, preferably if the wine is opened a few minutes before consumption to promote its aromatic expression.
