CANTINA DI CALASETTA
The Calasetta Winery is one of the most important historical winemaking sites in southwestern Sardinia and represents a point of reference for the valorization of the Carignano del Sulcis and Vermentino di Sardegna. Its history and peculiarities are deeply linked to the Calasetta area and the local cooperative culture. The winery was officially founded in 1932, when thirteen winemakers from the town decided to join forces to create a common structure capable of winemaking and promoting the local grapes. The aim from the outset is to ensure consistent quality and give value to local agricultural work, in a difficult context but rich in viticultural tradition. Over time, the cooperative gradually grew, involving an ever-increasing number of members and expanding its production facilities, with the development of the plant in the ’50 years and subsequent modernization interventions that brought the cellar to its current configuration. One of the main peculiarities of the Cantina di Calasetta is its strong connection with a unique territory. The vineyards are located in the Sulcis area and on the island of Sant'Antioco, where the Mediterranean climate, strong sea breezes, and especially the sandy soils have allowed the survival of free-standing vineyards, that is, those not grafted onto American vines. This phenomenon is rare worldwide and has allowed the preservation of very ancient strains of Carignano, which produce grapes of great concentration and identity. The winery also stands out for its cooperative structure, today made up of around a hundred winemaking members who work in a shared way to enhance the area. This model has allowed us to maintain a strong community identity and combine tradition and winemaking innovation, with modern technologies applied to winemaking without losing the connection with historical practices. From a production perspective, the Calasetta Winery is known for its ability to express two complementary souls: on the one hand, wines linked to everyday tradition and drinkability, and on the other, more structured and distinctive labels that showcase the excellence of the area. The production lines reflect precisely this philosophy, always keeping the link with Sardinia and its native varieties at the centre. In short, the Cantina di Calasetta represents a historical reality founded on cooperation, deeply rooted in a unique terroir of sand, sea, and wind, and committed for nearly a century to the authentic valorization of Sulcis's winemaking heritage.
