GRAVNER

The Gravner winery is one of the most iconic and radical realities of the contemporary Italian wine scene. Its history is deeply linked to the figure of Josko Gravner, a Friulian winemaker who began his career in the production of white and red wines in Collio in the ’70s. After a more conventional initial production phase, in the years ’90 Gravner makes a decisive turning point that will change his approach to wine forever, marking the beginning of a unique production philosophy. The winery's uniqueness lies in the adoption of ancient techniques inspired by Georgian tradition, particularly the use of underground terracotta amphorae for fermentation and wine aging. This return to the origins arises from the search for authenticity, essentiality and total respect for the fruit and the territory. Starting in 2000, Gravner also abandoned barriques and drastically reduced interventions in the cellar, favoring long macerations on the skins for the whites, who thus took on a structure, color and complexity similar to red wines. Another distinctive element is the choice of traditional local grape varieties such as Ribolla Gialla, Pignolo, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, grown according to natural principles and with very low yields. The company is located in Oslavia, in a hilly context of great vocation, where the ponca soils (marls and sandstones) contribute to giving the wines a strong mineral imprint and great evolutionary capacity. Gravner is considered a world reference for the philosophy of wines “oranges” and the natural wine movement. His productions are characterized by very long bottle refinements, great structure, aromatic complexity and a strong territorial identity, which often divides the public between those who consider them extreme wines and those who consider them among the purest and most coherent expressions of the relationship between man and nature.
