Winery San Pietro


The San Pietro Estate is located at Tassarolo in Piedmont in the Gavi DOCG lands. Its particular position benefits of sun and a healthy air that comes from the Liguria sea. The estate has 60 hectares and it born on an old convent where the Benedictine friars already had the vineyards. The company always recycling in the respect of the nature by safeguarding the historical vineyards survived to the phylloxera which in XIX destroyed a bigger part of the vineyards in Europe.

The cultivation follow the biologic and biodynamic methods by excluding the use of chemical products, fertilizing, weed killers and insecticide. The vineyards making has done with the not invasive method by reducing the mechanization, using biodynamic compost and respecting the moon biodynamic calendar. The company philosophy is to bring to bottles a product born from sane and vital lands.

Interview with producer

How was the 2013 grape harvest?

Before we had a 10 years cycle of seasons characterized by very hot and dry weather which obliged us to move up the picking of the grapes because of the maturation. In 2013 there was a change in the climatic conditions. There was a strong and snowy winter, the spring was cold and very rainy and the summer was not particularly hot. The 15 days before the grape harvest were very important: an hot temperature during the day and a good thermal excursion by night  have helped the maturation. The picking was almost one month after the usual time but picking in September reminds us the old grape harvests (because the Cortese has been always picked from the 15th / 20th of September and so on). This step gives back to the wine a more original structure which is more typical for this typology. We can classify the 2013 as a “great year”.


Which are the future projects for your cellar?

The estate San Pietro which is a synthesis of history and modernity, for the next three years is building an old village by following the more modern techniques of the field by reducing the environmental impact, by saving in energy and using clean air. The village will be a 5 luxury stars hotel, with a SPA that will have cosmetics coming from the wine and two restaurants which will have the historical name of the territory: Bricco della Chiesa and Oratorio San Pietro. The resort will offer horse riding, golf course and bicycles path to have a relaxing, amazing and funny experience. This resort will be built by following the Greece gold standard to obtain an harmonic, perfect and beautiful building.

The 2015 will be an important year for Milan and the village has asked to the Milan foundation to commit itself in some innovative projects in collaboration with the Estate. The ambitious goal is to show a lyrical opera of Rossini in the 2015 summer.      


In your opinion, how much is important the improvement of the quality of the wines you produce?

This is the main goal. A good quality wine is the best business card you can have. The San Pietro estate do its marketing in different ways but of course this not exclude what the consumers will find in our bottle, that is a sane and good wine.


If you have to convince a customer to buy your wine, what would you say to him?

I would say not to lose the possibility of tasting a good quality and natural wine.

The biodynamic is a state of mind for the San Pietro Estate which means that this philosophy is adopted in the agricultural aspect and in general in what we do.

Our wines are made with care and a mixture of farmer wisdom and technology. 

In the glass you will find all the tastes and scents of our land.


Which is your favorite thing of your work?

I love being in constant contact with the nature.


Which is the worst thing of your work?

Accept producing compromises (that of course we do not).


If the Prime Minister would call you and he would ask you a wine for a very important dinner, which wine would you suggest him, and why?

First of all I would ask him which is the match. So we can start with an appetizer with our MANDORLO, fresh and scented  wine which calls the second glass.

I would follow with a GAVI SAN PIETRO for a fish dinner and with a SAN PIETRO BRUT for crustaceous courses. In case of a meat dinner I would suggest the NERO SAN PIETRO matched with cold cuts and red meat and the BELLAVITA for roasted meats and game.

We would finish with a dessert joined to l’ORO DI DONNA LINA.

Then everyone has his taste so our wines could be match also with strange dishes as for example our San Pietro Brut could be drunk all along the meal and joined to fresh strawberries.


If you have to give an advice to all the cellars of your territory, what would you advice?

We suggest to be focused also on a marketing strategy to exalt the best characteristics of the product.

A part from that we would also suggest to change the production to a biologic biodynamic one and to do that with awareness and with a maximum care of the product, not to have that quid that today is really fashionable.


In the last years the web commerce is expanding a lot, the online wine shops are growing up more and more; how do you consider this market news?

We are positive about that. We are a company which like facing to not conventional media and it time for the web to become another wine house. We have to tell to customers that buying the wine online is safe and it has different advantages. Italy has still to learn more from the oversea cellars.

Which is the wine you would suggest to the online Uritalianwines customers and why? Dipende

It depends always on the match. Even if by choosing the Gavi San Pietro, Nero San Pietro and San Pietro Brut you are sure. These are three wines we suggest for all the meal than is the consumer who has to find his personal match.
