Tanca Gioia Carloforte UTABARKA
Tanca Gioia Carloforte Winery
The Tanca Gioia Carloforte Winery is located in Carloforte, on the island of San Pietro (Sardinia). Here are produced the wines U-Tabarka.
The landscape is characterized by rugged and wild coastline with a picturesque waterfront and a riot of colors and scents of the Mediterranean scrub.
The winery Tanca Gioia unique to the island, was founded in year 2000 thanks to the courage of the two founders. they took advantage of the very favorable climatic conditions and the composition of the volcanic soil and decided to grow, in the vineyards spread over multiple levels, only indigenous and traditional grapes such as Vermentino di Sardegna, Carignano, Bovale (Bovaleddu), Moscato di Sardegna and the Nasco Aromatico.
The company is very suited for important red wines, but proposes some white wines decidedly original and interesting as the “Perdigiournou” (dry wine assembly of Vermentino, Moscato and Nasco grapes) or “Giancu”, pure Vermentino.
With the curious name of “U-Tabarka” given its wines, the company wants to pay homage to the history of their land: the name derives from Tabarka, a Tunisia’s village famous as a colony of Genoese fishermen who had to abandon it in year 1738, then moved on Island of San Pietro (Sardinia, Italy).
Carloforte village still reminds us of the Liguria’s villages: the dialect very similar to Genoese dialect and closely packed buildings, similar to the Ligurian alleys.
Interview with producer
Which are the future projects for your cellar?
The stability and the develop of the clientele, and the improving of the quality by keeping the same prices. We think that everyone has to play its part. Concerning the wines we are studying a new idea which is in reality an idea born two millennium ago, but we are not saying more…follows us and find it out!
“A man who doesn’t drink wine has something to hide”. (Charles Baudelaire)
In your opinion, how much is important the improvement of the quality of the wines you produce?
The research of the high quality is our constant worry: we produce little quantity of wine, with a very high selection of the grape and the wine making is considered as an art so we do it with passion.
If you have to convince a customer to buy your wine, what would you say to him?
We are a little cellar who produces wine exclusively from local vineyards, some of them have disappeared. We are the few in the world who cultivate on the sand and so with ungrafted vine: the grapes are without grafts and this permits to have incredibly intense scents.
Our technic of cultivation are practically bio and the wine making is almost always biodynamic. We do not use wood which is normally used to hide the wine defected and makes all the wines similar to each other’s and so anonymous. Our philosophy is the selection and the extreme quality: every glass has to satisfy us because the wine is an absolute pleasure.
“Life is too short to drink mediocre wines” (Johann Wolfgang von Goethe).
Which is your favorite thing of your work, and which is the worst?
I love the working in the vineyards and in the cellar, we are a wonderful island. The thing I like the less in the bureaucracy connected to the wine.
If the Prime Minister would call you and he would ask you a wine for a very important dinner, which wine would you suggest him, and why?
If he would tell me that the dinner is based on meat I would suggestMallureddus alla campidanese (a rustic sausage sauce) joined to our bovale Ciù Roussou: two local traditional products which have a voluptuous, intense and complete flavors.
If he would tell me that the dinner is based on fish I would suggest the Tuna alla Carlofortina (roasted tuna) that, as it is a rich fish course, it has to be joined by a structured white wine such as our “Perdigiournou” or by an elegant red wine such as the Carignano DOC “Roussou”.
If you have to give an advice to all the cellars of your territory, what would you advice?
The quantity never provides for the quality, nor in the wines.
In the last years the web commerce is expanding a lot, the online wine shops are growing up more and more; how do you consider this market news?
We are very positive: our wine born on an island of the island; the web permits us of being well represented and well introduced to all the passionate even at the end of the earth.
Our wines make the rest of the work.
Why have you decided to commit the sale of the wines to the online wine shop Uritalianwines?
The design of the web site and the clarity of the contents are essential for a useful and pleasant surf.
Which is the wine you would suggest to the online Uritalianwines customers and why?
We suggest the rosé Carignano DOC “Flamingo”. This is a fresh wine because it can be joined to every course and it has a good quality/price ratio and most of all every glasses will satisfy you. We think this is the best way to know us, then one thing gives birth to another.
